The Sunflower State turns 163 years old today!
Golf came to Kansas, like much of the Midwest, in the very early 1900s as Scottish golf professionals migrated to the United States. Many moonlighted as golf course designers and a special few like Bendelow and Ross made legendary careers out of their craft.
The early courses were country clubs and stand as some of the most classic courses in Kansas today - Topeka Country Club, Kansas City Country Club, Mission Hills Country Club, Salina Country Club, and Wichita Country Club for starters. Golf started to expand to the rural towns in the 1920s and beyond as all the major railroad and agriculture towns built a course to call their own.
From pasture grass and sand green layouts to top 100 championship golf courses and everything in between, Kansas has it all. While the championship courses always make for a special loop, the small town courses make for a fun adventure.
