Americana Meets Golf: Turkey Creek Golf Course

Small towns, dusty backroads. Two-lane highways lined by truck stops, American flags, and country supply stores. High school basketball and strong local pride. Name your vision of Americana - McPherson, KS has it, and Turkey Creek Golf Course checks all the boxes for local golfers.

Turkey Creek Golf Course

McPherson, KS has been an important spot in the Kansas economy dating back to the late 1800s when it was a junction for numerous train routes. Today it's home to the CHS Refinery, US Highway 56, and nearly two dozen State Boys' and Girls' Basketball Championships. Turkey Creek Golf Course was built in 1990 and the par 70 design stretches just over 6,300 yards.

The front nine weaves between a neighborhood and Dry Turkey Creek while the back nine is bordered by crop fields. Golfers must navigate several water hazards lining the fairways of 10 of the 14 par 4s and par 5s. Once in the fairways, golfers face approach shots into well-bunkered, elevated greens. The greens offer challenging, but fair undulation for chipping and putting. Even though Turkey Creek is shorter than most courses on paper, the windy layout forces and rewards strategic tee shots and approaches.

Turkey Creek is meticulously cared for as course conditions are consistently good, but beyond that, the property is beautiful. The course was built around towering Cottonwood trees that frame many holes and golden native grass adds a beautiful touch to pond banks and the walks between holes. Some of the tee boxes and creeks are surrounded by a stone border for an extra touch. Impressed is an understatement for Turkey Creek's impression on us during the KSHSAA 5A State Boys Championship.

Whether it's to experience classic Central Kansas Americana or a beautiful 18 holes, the trek to McPherson to play Turkey Creek is well worth the trip!
